Product Description:

"This series began with an investigation into the imperative in contemporary self-help culture. The concept of self-help is uniquely American. The idea that one should always be self-supporting is a pervasive belief, tracing its roots back to the Puritans. I started to question how this culture manifests itself in the contemporary settings of social media sites like Instagram and Facebook. During my research, I picked several aphorisms that are meant to offset personal pain and kickstart personal growth. Often, these imperatives take the form of an idealistic image with overlaid text. These images are specifically chosen for their romantic and fantasy driven power which can be just as manipulative as the imperative inscribed upon it. I continued to develop the possibilities of image and overlaid imperative. The image and text were completely disconnected until one overlaid the other. In other words, they were independent of each other in a way that seemed revolutionary to me in the history of visual culture. "
